Is Email Dead?

In this day and age a business owner might be thinking, “Why even bother emailing when there is social media available for marketing?”, but this thought will end up being a big mistake. Although social media is seen as the next big thing, replacing emails would be a hard task. Email is used today to send and receive information on a more personal level than social media. Sending out an email is another form to communicate when compared to the big array of social media.

Although the first email was sent 48 years ago, today there is 3.9 billion email users worldwide, which is about 50% of the world’s population. So many people are sending and receiving emails from companies, school, or friends/family. By 2020, researchers expect the amount of people using emails to jump to 4 billion. These numbers show that around 76% of adults in the United States are using email to communicate with people around the world. Adobe even did a study on email use and found out that those older than 25 or older prefer to be contacted by brands via email. It might be easy to say that only older people use emails but in 2017, of those aged 15-24 and 24-44 around 91% in both groups were shown to have email accounts.

In spite of the large choice of social media apps people still spend around 2.5 hours a week to check their personal email. Email isn’t just used at home either lots of people still use emails for work. Adobe found that 31% of communication in workplaces is through email. Keeping this in mind only using social media marketing is a way to miss people who only use email instead of social media.

Although while emailing is still a hot commodity not having some social media presence is also a bust. Around 3.2 billion people today use social media and while social media has 700 million less users than email, 3.2 billion is around 42% of the population. That is a lot of people who are connecting through social media and surfing the web.

Looking at all these statistics it is easy to see that social media has not replaced emailing just yet. In turn it is reasonable to have a marketing strategy that uses both emails and social media to connect with consumers.
